Summer
For six weeks every summer, one hundred and eighty New York public school students attend a full day of academic classes modeled on Horace Mann’s current curriculum. Each week, students receive forty hours of rigorous academic instruction with a strong emphasis on:
- language arts
- math
- science
- music theater
- visual art
- library science
- computer skills
The main focus of the program is on academic enrichment, but SOH also encourages students' social and ahtletic development. Students socialize during lunch and a daily recess. They also enjoy five periods of physical education a week that include swimming, gymnastics tennis, and team sports.
John Dorr Nature Laboratory
Each summer, students in each grade spend two days at Horace Mann’s John Dorr Nature Laboratory in Washington Connecticut, where they enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and climbing. For many of our students, this trip marks the first time they experience the exhilaration of hiking under the stars or swimming in a mountain lake. Students also learn about teamwork and personal responsibility, because the activities at Dorr encourage them to rely on themselves, and on one another.
