High School Summer Programs:  The Rising Nines

This program is not being held in 2011.

Rising Nines Program. In July 2007, SOH began a three-week program for rising 9th graders to help them improve their academic skills during the summer vacation before they enroll in high school. Students attend language arts and math classes taught by faculty from Horace Mann and other schools. The program includes enrichment in art and music, and instruction in swimming and tennis. One day each week is reserved for a trip. In 2007, SOH took Rising Nines students to a Mets game at Shea Stadium, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and on board the Clearwater sloop for a day of learning about sailing and the ecology of the Hudson River.

An additional purpose of the Rising Nines program is to strengthen students’ ties to SOH so that they will continue to benefit from all the program has to offer while they are in high school. SOH implemented the Rising Nines program with 16 students in the summer of 2007. As a result of the program, the number of 9th graders participating in our 2007-2008 HS Program increased to 13, from 9 in 2006-2007. In 2008, 19 students participated in the Rising 9s program.
