High School Program: Academic Year

SAT prep class, 2010
SOH’s High School Program is for SOH students only. During the academic year, SOH offers classes and activities to prepare SOH students for college and maintain the SOH community for program alumni. A sample of academic year programming includes:
Saturday Classes
Test Prep Classes: 15-18 English and Math SAT classes of each subject
Academic Review: 10-15 Science Review classes
Writing Workshops: 10-15 classes
College Admissions Workshops
For students and their families. Held on Saturday mornings/early afternoons or weekday evenings.
College Visits
SOH chaperones small groups of students on day and overnight tours of colleges in the northeast. Students see colleges, and talk to admissions personnel and college students. In 2007- 2008, SOH took 21 students on tours of Bard, Colgate, Connecticut, Cornell, Ithaca, Trinity, and the University of Connecticut. Students said the visits were “eye-opening experiences.”
College Counseling
In the fall, the Director of the HS Program counsels individual seniors and review their college essays. In the spring, the Director meets with students to discuss their acceptances and financial aid packages, and helps them make the best decision for college.
Group Community Service Projects
These may include: Youth Service Opportunities Project (volunteer at a soup kitchen), Wave Hill’s Group Volunteer Day, and the 92nd Street Y Teensgiving.
Cultural/Social Events and Career Explorations
These may include: attendance at Broadway or off-Broadway performance(s), museums, and/or tours of a District Attorney’s Office or Courthouse.
High School Visits
The Director of the High School Program also visits high schools that SOH students attend and meet with guidance counselors to help resolve any problems students may have. Previous visits to several high schools have been very well received by high school counselors. The Director may also meet with admissions officers for reference for students applying to these schools.
