High School Program

SOH students visiting Rutgers, Fall 2010
“Summer on the Hill taught me to overcome obstacles. In pursuing a career in medicine, I learned that only 1% of Latinos are in the medical profession. Knowing this, I realized that as a pre-med student, I would face many challenges. Nevertheless, I did not give up…
My hard work paid off …I would like to thank SOH for helping me realize that whatever dreams I have, I can turn them into a reality…to be the first doctor in my family.” SOH alumna attending Albert Einstein College of Medicine
SOH’s High School Program helps alumni of our Grade 3-8 Program make the transition to high school and apply to college. Many SOH students are the first in their families to be headed for college and benefit from the ongoing encouragement of the HS Program Director and faculty. SOH’s objectives are to:
- improve SOH students’ scores and provide strong support by holding SAT

SAT prep class, 2010
and review classes in writing and science during the academic year,
- maintain and/or raise our overall 97% college-going rate,
- offer timely information to students and parents through financial aid and college admissions workshops, and by taking students on college tours,
- develop leadership skills of selected high school students in a summer internship program, and
- expand our students’ knowledge of NYC’s culture, opportunities, and challenges through cultural activities, career explorations, and community service.
“Throughout my senior year of high school, Summer on the Hill has helped me the most. They’ve held workshops on the college application process, they’ve provided me with the resources to apply to scholarships, they helped me revise my college essays, they’ve written recommendations for me, and they’ve done countless things in addition to that. Thanks to all of their help, I’ve been accepted to all eight colleges I applied to this year including Dartmouth, MIT, and the University of Pennsylvania, which is where I’ll be enrolling in the fall.” – SOH graduation speech of Danny Fernandez, SOH alumnus, Brooklyn Tech HS Class of 2006, and the University of Pennsylvania/Wharton School of Business Class of 2010.
