SOH‘s five-week Grade 3-8 summer program, held on the Lower and Upper Division campuses of the Horace Mann School, is an important part of SOH. The summer program includes daily, intensive instruction in language arts, math, and science.  SOH also develops students’ creativity in the performing and visual arts, and provides basic instruction in swimming and tennis.

New students begin their participation in SOH’s summer program for an immersion into the program. The summer program staff includes returning teachers (70% return each year), new faculty, administrators, and 25 high school students who are trained to work with the younger children under staff supervision. Enrollment for the summer program is generally between 210 and 220 students, who attend:

  • 14 periods/week of language arts,
  • 8 periods/week of science,
  • 8 periods/week of math,
  • 8 periods of musical theatre,
  • a daily recreation period, with instruction in swimming or tennis, and
  • 2 periods/week of visual art.

In the summer, student enthusiasm is high and attendance is excellent! On parents’ visiting day, students perform skits in language arts, do science projects, and demonstrate their progress in math.

The musical theatre classes culminate in exuberant productions for families and staff.

The summer program is a time of learning and friendship, as students who saw each other only on Saturdays during the academic year are together every day. These friendships are important to students who may not have peers with similar interests at their public schools.
