SOH Curricula

The academic objectives of this program are to enrich students’ understanding of core subjects through accelerated classes, and to offer opportunities in the arts and sports, subjects that are infrequently taught in the public schools.  Instruction is based on Horace Mann’s curricula.  Classes are taught by experienced teachers from independent, parochial, and public schools. The academic program promotes critical thinking and hands-on activities. The science program includes a discussion/lecture period, a lab, and instruction in writing lab reports. In language arts, students read and discuss complete works appropriate for their grade level (e.g., Romeo and Juliet for 8th graders) and participate in creative activities, such as the writing and publishing of a newspaper about the Greek gods (5th grade). Math teachers use innovative means to introduce and reinforce math concepts. At the middle school level, the curriculum looks forward to high school by introducing students to abstract ways of thinking; however, instruction also includes hands-on activities to make learning real and engaging for young adolescents.

SOH’s Dean of Students/Curriculum Coordinator works with teachers to ensure that the curriculum responds to children’s needs. At the end of each trimester, teachers write progress reports about their students that are sent to students’ homes and schools. The Dean reviews the reports and works with teachers and parents to address areas of concern.
