Grade 3-8 Academic Year Program
“My first impression of SOH was nothing short of amazement….” SOH student/graduate of the Bronx High School of Science
The Grade 3-8 academic year program is organized into three trimesters of six weeks each. At the end of each trimester, teachers write progress reports on student work that are sent to parents and schools. The progress reports are reviewed by SOH’s Dean of Students, who meets with parents to discuss any concerns. The schedule is:
Each Saturday: 3 periods of language arts (incl. one period of writing) One period of physical education.
Every two Saturdays: 3 periods of math and science (e.g., 2 periods of math & 1 of science on Saturday A; 2 periods of science & 1 of math on Saturday B ). Science classes include labs.
SOH’s science classes include discussions, labs, and instruction in report-writing. In language arts, students read and discuss complete works appropriate for their grade (e.g., Romeo and Juliet for 7th graders) and participate in creative activities, such as the writing and publishing of a newspaper about Greek gods (5th grade). Math teachers use innovative means to introduce and reinforce math concepts.
Led by teachers who are professionals in their field, SOH’s performing arts classes delve into the musical theatre repertory. Students learn singing, public speaking, and acting, vocabulary and musical terms. SOH’s sports teachers combine their enthusiasm for teaching soccer, gymnastics, basketball, and other seasonal sports with an emphasis on safety, following directions, and teamwork.
“The facility was very well kept and aesthetically pleasing. Studentswere able to share ideas and learn from one another. The teachers were another excellent feature of SOH. Their diligent efforts showed their desire for us to succeed…”
Students in SOH’s Grade 3-8 program attend their public schools while participating in the program. Students who leave their public school for an independent school before 8th grade, may no longer participate in the Grade 3-8 program, but are welcome to return to SOH after their 8th grade graduation.
Parent Workshops on Adolescent Development
Each year, SOH holds workshops for parents on adolescent development and the path to college. In recent years, workshops led by school and guidance professionals have covered:
- Helping children handle stress and peer pressure
- Middle School curriculum overview
- Learning styles
- Making the transition to an independent high school.
“The workshop was interesting because now I understand better how to deal with my two daughters, twelve and fourteen years old.” – SOH parent
“I like the idea of working with children using their particular style of learning and would love to pursue [more information on] that further.” – SOH parent
