Alumni News

There is much to celebrate this year! The largest class in SOH history has entered college. Our alumni are now attending Baruch, Boston College, Brooklyn Polytechnic, Colby, Duke, Middlebury, SUNY, Union and Vassar. 100% of the SOH high school graduating class of 2004 is currently attending college.

Best wishes to all of our high school juniors and seniors! During the fall college admissions period, SOH staff provided guidance, test preparation classes, and wrote college recommendations. We are also offering ten SAT classes in preparation for the 2005 administrations of the SAT.

Other News

In mid-November, 23 alumni spent a weekend at the John Dorr Nature Laboratory, supervised by SOH staff. The weekend featured sledding after a fresh snowfall, walks in the woods, and a home-cooked, family style Thanksgiving dinner. Dorr provided a beautiful setting for staff and students to enjoy the strong bonds that have developed over the years.

Last year, 12 students and the Director of Post-Placement & Mentors participated in the Youth Service Opportunities Project (YSOP) weekend. Everyone enjoyed dinner with guests from a homeless shelter during an evening highlighted by a spirited Bronx-versus-Brooklyn rivalry (many of the men were from Brooklyn)! At the upcoming YSOP weekend, alumni will stay overnight at a Quaker Meeting House in Lower Manhattan, cook for the guests, and learn about the causes of, and remedies for homelessness from homeless people and professionals in the field.
