Dr. John McIvor, Ph.D.
Founder and Executive Director, Summer on the Hill
B.A. M.A., Div., St. Joseph’s Seminary and College; S.T.D., St. Thomas Aquinas University, Rome, Italy. Dr. McIvor has held pastoral, administrative and teaching positions, as follows: Assistant Pastor, Incarnation Church, Manhattan, from 1967-1972, Professor of Theology, at St. Joseph’s Seminary, from 1975-1990, and Pastor, St. John the Evangelist, Mahopac, N.Y., 1990-1993. Between 1993-1999, he served as Assistant Director of Admissions, Mentor to Students of Color, and Ethics Teacher, at Horace Mann. He is currently Executive Director of SOH (1994-present), and Horace Mann’s Director of Community Service, (1999-present), and founder and Director of Horace Mann Lower Division After-School Activities (1995-present).

Julia Baez-Veliz
Assistant Director; Director of Recruitment, Admission and Placement

B.A., Connecticut College, M.A., Manhattan College. Ms. Baez-Veliz has ten years of experience in education as a teacher and administrator: Assistant Teacher, Horace Mann Lower Division, 1994-96; SOH Teacher, Grade 3, 1995-1999; Assistant Teacher, Fieldston Ethical Culture School, 1996-1998; and BEGIN Language Program, Adult ESL Instructor, 1998-1999.

Rita Retzlaff
Coordinator of Curriculum/Dean of Students, 2001- present
B.S. Cabrini College of Education, M.S. Lehman College of the City University of New York. Ms. Retzlaff’s dedication to education is a tremendous asset to Summer on the Hill. Her experience includes: Teacher, Horace Mann Lower Division, 1980–present; Summer on the Hill Teacher, 1997-2000; and Science Teacher and Curriculum Coordinator, St. Elizabeth School, 1966-1980.

Anne F. Gilheany
Director of Post-Placement, 2003 - present
Grinnell College, B.A. American University, School of International Service: coursework in Comparative and Regional Studies. Anne worked as a History and Art teacher, Saint Jean Baptiste H.S., 1999-2000 ; History and French teacher, and Assistant to Director of Achievement Center, 2000-2001; Academic Coach at Futures Academy, Countee Cullen Community Center, 2002-present.

Faculty: SOH's faculty members are drawn from Bronx public and independent schools. A majority of our teachers have Master's degrees. Seventy percent of our teachers return to SOH each year.
